How This Affected Shippers
As you know Yellow Corporation and its subsidiaries: YRC, Reddaway, New Penn, Holland, and HNRY Logistics have filed for bankruptcy and have ceased operations. Without warning they stopped accepting pickups and the same day without warning ceased making deliveries that were already en route to their receivers. This put customers and carriers in a bind when they had to go to recover loads to make deliveries.
Yellow is a large corporation with 99 years in business, they knew not completing deliveries completely stops the supply chain or hinders and delays production to say the least. The closure was ultimately mismanaged, to say the least. It takes preparation to go out of business and ultimately how they handled the matter could have been better. All deliveries should have been completed before letting everyone go.
Customers are still experiencing nightmares logistically (as of August 25). The shipments have stopped being tracked on the portal, customer service is calling different terminals to locate pallets, the terminals are having a hard time releasing pallets to the carriers that are being hired to recover the loads, and corporate is sending invoices for undelivered packages. This entire situation causes more lost pallets via Yellow of course and they are no longer processing and paying out on claims. It's currently an LTL nightmare!
Shippers, Warehouse Managers, and Supply Chain Managers don't have time to call and check on each individual pallet every day to see when the pallet is and if it was picked up. Reaching out to your trusted 3PL and having them do the grunt work is the easiest way to save from headaches and work on the important task. Unfortunately, daily calls and manual checks at the terminals are one of the only ways we have seen any progress in recovering the loads at this time. Time is of the essence and it is in shippers best interest to move quickly to avoid lost freight.
Remember to use brokerages that have their own contingent cargo insurance. In the case of Yellow going out of business, they are losing pallets but can't pay for it as they are protected not to pay through bankruptcy. Having a covered 3PL that is insured is another security measure that protects the shipper.
All in all, no one is happy with what is going on but if your shipment is stuck at a terminal you can reach out to our brokerage department and we can help recover you.
